The 32nd Pig Snout gathering has been completed, and the annals of Adirondack Lore have another historic chapter. Arrivals began on Thursday, September 7, with some late arrivals completing the roster at the historic Cedar River Camp on Friday. Along with the veterans was Grant McAuliffe, a first-time camper, for a total attendance of 9, braving the perils of the Adirondack Wilderness in search of adventure.
Housing for attendees had an additional wrinkle beyond the cabin and Matt &Gus’ tent, with Mike Moore rolling in with his still-in-development Mercedes Camper—a reminder for some of our senior members of a 1960’s Chevy van modified by Uncle Cecil. I will add that, as the senior member in attendance, I continue to enjoy the honeymoon suite in the cabin.
Food again was a highlight, with family-sized strip steaks for each member as the pièce de résistance on Friday night. We must also thank Maureen for our Spaghetti with Sausage and Meatballs on Saturday. As always, everybody contributed to a feast at every meal and in between. As always, tests of physical endurance continue to challenge all in attendance, including water crafts on the Cedar River Flow, disc golf in Speculator, as well as an impromptu course set up on the banks of the Cedar River, a hike towards Cascade Mountain, and the relentless pursuit of the wily Brook Trout. Additional challenges included an extended power outage (mitigated by a backup generator) and a lack of gas for the grill.
And now the most historic portion of any Pig Snout – the tasting now known as the tastings. Last year’s winner, Pat, had chosen Wheat Beer for the tasting, with an additional tasting of cheddar cheese. Again, the competition was fierce; even after relabeling, a winner could not be declared. So a coin toss was employed (as recommended by the bylaws in the case of a tie) to determine that John McAuliffe’s Apricot Wheat won over whippersnapper Grant McAuliffe’s Castle Island. The cheddar cheese competition was no less intense, with campers making great efforts to secure victory in the first such tasting. A mulled apple cider accompanied the cheese tasting, adding an additional layer to the competition, with Gus McAuliffe’s Old Quebec and Raw Cow as the champions. And now for the news that you all have been waiting for – the tastings for Pig Snout 2024 – Beverage – NA Beer and Appetizer – Cheese from France.
Our annual meeting raised some issues for discussion. We were asked and approved to move the event to the second weekend after Labor Day, if available. It turns out that it is available, and Pig Snout 2024 will be held on September 12 to 15, 2024. Also, in an impressively organized approach, food responsibilities have been established: Friday Breakfast – John M, Lunch-Matt, Dinner – Pat, Salad – Dan; Saturday Breakfast – John, Lunch – Matt, Dinner – Grant, Salad – Dan; Sunday Breakfast John—snacks and Coffee – Mike, Dessert – Gus, Beverages – Rick.
With all of that having been reported, Louise and I hope you had a Merry Christmas and wish all of your families a Happy New Year
