Wow! 25 years of rugged outdoorsmen gathering to enjoy life in the Adirondack Mountains. Family and occasionally friends enduring the challenges of survival in the wilderness. Living off the land while remaining faithful stewards of the earth we occupy.
With this background the Pig Snout marketing team sought to develop a suitable tag line and action phrase for the gathering. The results of their efforts have been enthusiastically embraced by those in attendance. Our tag line is to be: “You can’t teach a pig to sing, you’ll only irritate the pig”. The action word will be “snoutin”. I have taken the initiative of proposing a couple of logo ideas as you can see. This would be subject to approval at the next formal meeting of Pig Snout.
Now that I have taken care of the formalities of Pig Snout 25. Let me report on the event. Mike Moore and I met at the NYS Cranberry Lake Campground on Thursday morning. After some creative efforts we were able to secure the campsites designated by the Site Selection Committee in their earlier exploration adventure. Unfortunately half of the site selection committee, Gerard was not able to attend this year’s event and was sorely missed. We also secured a supply of local firewood and erected a rain shelter that challenged all of our construction skills. The site was magnificent with a private beach, nearby facilities and a resident chipmunk (Mike Moore’s personal buddy). Canoeing activities were limited by windy conditions creating rough conditions on the water. Fishing was also limited by the low water levels. On the plus side there was a nearby mountain to conquer. Uncle Ray lead the way to the summit pulling away from the crowd setting a torrid pace. Personally I was ready to end the climb prematurely but after being passed by a young woman carrying her child I was shamed into persevering to the top.
The tasting for this year was red wine. A varied selection of contenders vied for the honor of being crowned the Silver anniversary winner. It quickly became apparent that one contender outshone all the others. 2014 Cline Pinot Noir won by an almost unanimous vote. Oh, it was entered by yours truly. As the winner of the tasting I announced that Beer will be the tasting beverage for 2017. No further criteria are noted for submissions.
As has been the case for all Pig Snouts the food was outstanding. Pat’s Clam Chowder was amazing, Aunt Margie’s Spaghetti was delicioso, Salads by Dan were scrumptious, Appetizers from Mike were exquisite, Lunches from Uncle Ray and John satisfied even the most discriminating palate while John’s Breakfasts would put the best of chef’s efforts to shame.
Well I’ve managed to fill another page of rambling about the 25th annual Pig Snout and now I need to remind everyone that Pig Snout 26 will take place on September 8, 9 and 10 at a location to be determined. Save the date. So from our family to yours – Merry Christmas and Happy New year
