Let me start this tome with a brief review of this year’s tasting. The beverage to be judged was a beer from New England, New Jersey, or New York. The only qualification was that “beer” appear on the label. I searched for a beverage that reflected the quality and personality of our event. A portrait of the subject brew is shown at right. Unfortunately our esteemed judges did not see fit to award this entry a single vote. So in the spirit of the season I am awarding myself the title of best theme beer of 2012. And now that I’ve aired my sour hops let’s get to the real news of this year’s trip.
The official result was first place going to Saranac Adirondack Lager, and coming in second was Genesee Cream Ale. John McAuliffe was the provider of the winner, and he has determined that the 2013 tasting will be Scotch Whisky. Let me now report on the twenty-first annual Pig Snout gathering, held this past September on the Independence River in remote Lewis County, New York. We were very pleased to have cousin John Santmann join us for his first Pig Snout. He acclimated immediately to the rigorous activities of this band of rugged outdoorsmen. We were fortunate to complete our hike before the storm on Saturday. It took us on several horse trails, and we ran into a group of horsewomen similar to 2010, and we spent a few minutes describing the concept and history of Pig Snout. I think they were impressed.
Oh yes, the storm. With access to modern technology, we were aware of a severe storm warning for the area, including rain, hail, and damaging winds. We planned to deploy a large tarp over the screen shelter to protect us from the impending cataclysm. Fortunately, we just had heavy rain without all the other forecasted weather. Unfortunately, Pat and Ted were not able to attend this year. Aunt Margie came through again, providing a tasty Chili for Friday night and the traditional Spaghetti with sausage and meatballs on Saturday. Gerard’s camper was very roomy this year, with Mike and John Santmann sharing a tent on the riverbank, leaving the camper with only five occupants. The weather put a damper on the fishing this year, though Gerard had some success. As always, thanks to the efforts of Uncle Ray, the two Johns, and Mike, we ate like royalty with sumptuous snacks, outstanding lunches, imaginative Hors d’ouvres, and invigorating breakfasts.
Not wanting to beat a dead horse, I won’t go into detail about the variety of adult beverages available this year. I do feel compelled to mention that the pillow pet was back again. Also, on a positive note, the facilities Pat and I built in 2010 were in excellent operating condition.
The dates for 2013 Pig Snout are September 6, 7, and 8, 2013. Site selection will commence as soon as the ice goes out of the Sacandaga River.
