Pig Snout 2013 was awesome in so many ways. I’ll start with the tasting. Scotch, the beverage of choice selected by last year’s winner John McAuliffe, proved to be an interesting competition. A wide range of Scotches were entered including the brand swilled at Pig Snout II, Pig’s Nose and others including the winner Oban submitted by John McAuliffe. Do you sense a trend here? Well, as the winner, John M decided that the 2014 tasting will be whiskey. There are no further qualifications. Please remember that this decision is not subject to change per Rule 202.7(a)(2).

Our location, Helldiver Pond, was a jewel. We knew in advance that a moose frequented the pond, so our Safety Officer started our stay with a briefing on what to do in the event of a moose attack. It seemed to me a better plan was to run faster than somebody else and let them talk reassuringly to the moose. It turned out to be unnecessary as the moose never appeared while we were looking. The site included extra picnic tables, modern facilities, and a nice gravel trail to the pond. It came in handy when I was trying to find my wedding ring. Fortunately, John M. remembered seeing me washing up next to the vehicle that morning. Apparently the cold water created a little shrinkage on the finger as the ring was under the truck! Finding the ring made the trip home much more pleasant.

Activities included lots of kayaking, including Uncle Jim, a fishing effort that yielded minimal results, and a nice hike to Beaver Lake (Uncle Ray sets a torrid pace). Surprisingly, we ran into my Veterinarian on the trail. A little rain put a damper on our activities, but Mike Moore (what doesn’t he have in that vehicle) came through with enough tarps to give us cover for meals and for staring at the campfire. John Santmann (he dared to return) did a superb job as Medical Officer, coming fully prepared with a defibrillator, band-aids, poison ivy ointment, and moose repellent.

As always, we ate like kings without having to harvest any local wildlife, berries, or other native plants. Aunt Margie had prepared a pair of feasts: a savory beef stew and the always-stupendous spaghetti with meatballs and sausage. Again this year the two Johns, Uncle Ray and Mike provided great breakfasts, lunches and munchies. I might mention that the selection of beers for thirst quenchers was more diverse than ever, and I will use the results to develop next year’s selection.

There is not enough room here to present the minutes of our official meeting, so that I will offer the highlights. The meeting was called to order by Uncle Jim. It was met with a unanimous, excited response to invite Uncle Cecil and David Moore to Pig Snout 23. Uncle Ray received an ovation for his efforts as fire marshal. He has developed a fire building system that is nothing short of astounding. If Patrick can attend next year, we’d like to request a repeat of his New England Clam Chowder for Friday dinner. We are hopeful that both Ted and Pat will be back after a two-year hiatus. Gerard reminded all
attendees that, as our legal representative, he must attest to the NYS Parole Board that all members are in compliance with their respective local parole boards, so keep it clean.

I can see the bottom margin, so I had better conclude this report by stating that Pig Snout 23 will commence on Friday, September 5, 2014. Mike Moore did some reconnoitering for a site and found a beauty at Otter Brook. Gerard has volunteered to claim the site on Thursday, September 4 to guarantee our occupancy for the weekend. He also asked for volunteers to accompany him. If Uncle Cecil and David make the trip, this is the site of choice. Well, here I am at the bottom of the page, so I’ll have to sign off with a heartfelt Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from our family to yours.

Where do I start?
