Whoever would have thought on that rainy weekend in 1992 that we would be talking about our twentieth edition of Pig Snout? Especially when you consider some of our early challenges. Just consider these: shots fired at our campsite, a near “drowning” in a rainwater-filled pup tent, fishing in a dead lake, 6 ounces of the winning scotch, camping neighbors whining about noise (after the fact), bear hunters, fallen trees marked with a prayer, and some personal faux pas that will not be mentioned.

Well, it happened. Aunt Margie and Uncle Jim discovered our site while searching far and wide for a suitable location. Camp Vigor of the Woods, the site’s name when I was there in the early 1960s, had everything we could want. Waterfront, plenty of room to spread out, hiking trails, fishing and historical significance. Mike Moore’s friend had claimed the site for us as well as providing a supply of firewood (sourced from within 50 miles of the site). Unfortunately, he was not able to join us for dinner to celebrate his contributions to the event. A bigger disappointment was the absence of Gerard and Josh, our highly anticipated inductee. Hopefully we will have a full crew for 2012. I have to mention that John and I (referred to as the B team of site selection) had made a trek to the woods in search of a site but had come up empty. We were able to rule out some sites that had been considered in the past.

As always, we ate like kings. Patrick prepared two pork tenderloins to perfection, but without Gerard we had some leftovers. The accompanying mashed potatoes, prepared with dietary discretion in mind, were a hit as well. Aunt Margie’s Spaghetti with meatballs and sausage was a welcome treat for Saturday night. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the hors d’oeuvres, including an outstanding salsa prepared by Mike Moore’s Kathryn, sumptuous lunches provided by Uncle Ray, a plethora of tasty snacks from Ted and John’s always satisfying (including real maple syrup) breakfasts.

This year’s tasting was red wine, as determined by last year’s winner, Uncle Ray. In an unprecedented result, there was a tie for the win between John’s 2008 Cellar No. 8 Zinfandel and Mike’s 2009 Spellbound Petite Syrah. In a matter of minutes, an official meeting of Pig Snout 2011 decided that the two winners will determine next year’s tasting between them and report their decision to the corporate scribe (me) immediately following Thanksgiving. This will be the timetable for all future decisions for the tasting having been moved, seconded and passed by those present. With this information, I am announcing that the 2012 Pig Snout to be celebrated on September 7, 8 and 9<\/strong>, and the tasting is a two-part event. Both nights will be beer. The first night will be NA Beer<\/strong>; the second night will be simply beer (NA or A)<\/strong>. The criteria are: beer must be printed on the label somewhere, and it must be brewed in NJ, NY, or New England. This allows everybody to showcase their local favorite.

As this letter is being written, Uncle Jim is on the mend following serious back surgery in late October. He is under the care and supervision of an outstanding nurse who will not put up with any back talk or insubordination. He is hoping to return to full participation in Pig Snout 2012. We all wish him a speedy and complete recovery. I also want to note that some concern has been raised that we may be getting a little “soft”. A couple of examples this year included a furry pillow that resembled my granddaughter’s pillow pet and raspberry sparkle lip gloss that I can’t relate to. Also, a member failed to bring his Pig Snout 2010 shirt. Let’s hope this is not the start of a trend.
