The latest adventure, which we refer to as Pig Snout, is in the book. We have Gerard and Uncle Jim to thank for our perfect campsite. They spent over 24 hours on the road trying to find just such a spot. It had everything: nice waterfront, nearby facilities, fresh dry firewood (all dead and down, of course), special trout fishing, mountain climbing, kayaking, camper repair, lost dog retrieval, swimming facilities, and more square footage under cover than the Wells Shopping Mall.

The beer tasting went off with minimal controversy. How could anyone have issues with the requirement that the label have “Beer” on it? It turned out to be a challenge for some but a winner was decided – John’s Saranac Black and Tan. An interesting dynamic was at work as the top vote getter in round 1 Pat’s Syracuse Pale Ale (5) versus the winner’s (3) finished second in the final round.

The tasting for 2010 will be “White Wine”. No reds, no blushes, no other criteria.

Cousin Mike Moore made his first “snout” and was a worthy addition. He brought great food and beverages and was very well prepared for the arduous camping experience that is Pig Snout. He was well behaved and did not embarrass any of the veterans with any camping etiquette faux pas. Remember the burning of an heirloom dinner plate some years ago? Speaking of food, I would be remiss if I failed to recognize Pat’s world-famous Clam Chowder. Aunt Marguerite’s Spaghetti and Meatballs and sausage definitely hit the spot on Saturday. John’s breakfasts and Uncle Ray’s lunches provided the energy needed for the hardcore primitive camping that we enjoy. It was good to have Ted back as well. His picture of John and me in kayaks and three stalwarts on a mountain is a classic that I blew up to 8X10, framed, and have hanging in our family room. He also had some shots of interesting plants that were fun to see. It was my pleasure to present official Pig Snouts to Pat, Ted and Mike thus making them official members of our elite group.

It is my pleasure to report for those who might not have attended that the level of moderation practiced by all was astounding. I don’t think I even heard any voices raised in disagreement during our time together. Well, maybe a little spirited discussion of the finer points of life in these United States at some point. Did I mention that we were on a special trout fishing pond? It was really special – nobody caught anything. It is reassuring that Ranger Pete told us that there are some really big ones in there, but nobody seems to be able to catch them.

Oh before I forget our tentative date for Pig Snout 2010 is the weekend after Labor Day September 10, 11 and 12. We will confirm the date after John determines if this is a conflict with Andrew’s schedule. We can confirm assignments for next year’s trip during the summer.

Well I’ve wasted another perfectly good piece of paper so let me close with Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Number 18 is history.
