Who ever would have thought? Our first trip was 16 years ago in 1992. It was a memorable trip that has been retold around many a campfire and cocktail since. It’s reached the point that I’m not sure exactly what happened. Who was it that got shot? And how did we escape the terrible pot crusher? And how many inches of rain fell that night?

Well enough about ancient history let me try to describe this year’s adventure to the Deer River State Forest. Louise and I had done the exploring to find a bucolic location deep in the wilderness of Northern Franklin County. Our campsite left little to be desired. Sandy beach, flat rock riverbed, custom latrine with a view, a stream flowing through the shelter, flat water for kayaking, a good firewood supply (Pat and Uncle Ray seem to need a lot) what more could we ask for? The fishing was outstanding with only one slight mishap involving a dangerous fishing projectile. Patrick was back and inspired all with his Kielbasa Stew. He tried to give credit to Michelle and the kids but I know he was thinking this is going to affect somebody in an urgent way.

Gerard won the White Wines of New York and New Jersey tasting with his submission – Baron de Rothschild or Dr Constantin Franc or some other camping legend. If you hear sour grapes it might have to do with my entry not receiving a single vote. There were other entries but Gerard definitely had the favorite by far. I do think I won best label (unofficial category) again with Onondaga Lake White. Aunt Marguerite’s Spaghetti with meatballs and sausage was a hit again prepared by our fine culinary staff. Uncle Ray’s lunches and John’s breakfasts were outstanding, providing the fuel necessary for all of the strenuous activities involved in wilderness camping.

The tasting for 2009 will be beer.<\/strong> Anything that has beer printed on the label is fair game. Bock, pilsner, lager whatever is OK. We will again make our trip on the weekend after Labor Day, September 11,12,and 13, 2009<\/strong>. The location is to be determined. Louise and I will check out the St Regis River south of St Regis Falls but all are welcome to scout other locations. I have to say again that Gerard’s camper made life most enjoyable for all. I have to report for those who are interested in such matters that a level of moderation was practiced by all with no stories to conceal. Other than the previously mentioned fishing mishap there were only a few scrapes from slipping on wet rocks to report. Assignments for 2009 can continue as in the past, Gerard Bait & Tackle, Uncle Ray Friday and Saturday Lunches, Pat Friday Dinner, John Saturday and Sunday Breakfasts, Uncle Jim Saturday
