Of course, one of the residents asked what the shirts were all about, which gave Gerard a chance to shift the conversation and test his hypothesis regarding which of us looks younger. And after 20 years or so since the last comparison, despite our strikingly youthful similarity, I was once again seen as the lesser-aged. Uncle Ray certainly got a kick out of the comparison and may have even said he agreed with the assessment.

While we reminisced with Uncle Ray and looked through family pictures, we shared a couple of adventure stories from Pig Snouts past. One of the best still is from my first Pig Snout in 2009, when Gerard brought his pop-up camper so we could experience the more luxurious, yet still adventurous, side of camping. However, we ran into a bit of a problem cranking up the pop-up after some mice had decided to test the accommodations for themselves by building a nest inside the cranking mechanism, causing it to lock in place. Uncle Ray, after taking inventory of what was on hand, rescued the situation by using butter as a lubricant to free the mechanism. And it worked!

As Gerard and I made our way to the cabin for Pig Snout 35, we planned to get dinner for our Snout brethren (Pat and Grant), who would join us later. Our idea was to grab a couple of pizzas; that is, until we passed by Oscar’s Smokehouse in Warrensburg, where you can find the best ribs and pork chops in all of the mighty Adirondacks. We ate so well that night that it was my vote to add a visit to Oscar’s every year henceforth.

Afterward, sitting around the campfire, we decided a good short hike for the next day would be OK Slip Falls, where, at the start of the Hudson River Gorge, a spectacular 250-foot waterfall sits in the middle of the Adirondack forest. We had visited the falls on a previous Pig Snout weekend, so we had an idea of what to expect. Also, the hike is generally rated as “moderate” difficulty at 6.5 miles, so it seemed like a reasonable choice, given the more senior members of the group. Three days later, I could still feel it in my calves.

With only 4 attendees this year, we decided to skip the blind tasting portion of the event and enjoy our appetizers and desserts openly, then perhaps decide which we enjoyed most. Kathryn’s salsa was clearly the most popular and most versatile appetizer, as it was consumed at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, under the Pig Snout by-laws, a non-participant may support the tasting only as represented by an attending member. I couldn’t find much more about it, but by the rules of common decency, it seems clear that, even though I was the purveyor of said salsa, I shouldn’t influence or vote myself the winner. However, were I to choose a tasting for next year, I would choose pickles. Nothing more, just pickles. For the dessert entry, on the first night we enjoyed an authentic New Hampshire apple orchard pie, and on the second night, a super moist orange cake drizzled with orange simple syrup and topped with crushed pistachios.

With continued perfect weather in the forecast for Saturday, we decided to do a shorter, less demanding hike (short walk?) to Buttermilk Falls. Although it’s a popular summertime spot, only half a dozen or so people were there, so each of us could reflect in our own perfect meditative silence. Being by the water also gave rise (?) to another fishing opportunity, which could have added to the brookie story from the previous morning, wherein Gerard caught one downstream from the cabin, brought it to Pat for cleaning, and, on Pat’s refusal, ultimately released it.

Sunday, we closed out another successful Pig Snout and returned to our regularly scheduled lives. Comments are welcome.

Pig Snout 35 is in the books!
