A new logo for our 19th year, courtesy of some creative spouses and much appreciated by all members of the expedition. I must mention that those ladies on horseback should not be judgmental of a group of hardy men attired 2010 in matching pink. We are all comfortable with who we are.
The holy trinity discovered our best ever campsite on the Independence River. The combined efforts of the father (Uncle Jim), the son (Gerard), and the holy spirit (Bill the mountain man) led us to a site that mortal men can only dream about. Plenty of room for a camper (well lubricated with butter) and a tent site with an abbreviated front porch but a majestic view of the river. Plenty of privacy for a privy designed by Pat and yours truly. What it lacked in appearance it made up for in comfort. The weather was cooperative in terms of precipitation. The rain holding off until we were packing up Sunday morning. We had an ample supply of firewood including that provided by the campsite down the road. The ax never made an appearance and the bow saw worked better with the higher tensioned blade.
Let me remind everybody about the tasting. It was white wine this year and the undisputed (?) winner was Uncle Ray’s entry a sassy little number from the State of Washington. La Toscana 2008 Reserve Riesling is a beautiful golden yellow color with aromas of rose petals, soft, with a hint of residual sugar that envelops the palate beautifully. Perfectly balanced …. oops, sorry back to the story. A reminder for all. With unanimous agreement we decided that the winner of the current tasting will pick the beverage for the following year. Uncle Ray has declared the tasting for Pig Snout 2011, our 20th annual, will be Gin.
The date for Pigsnout 2011 will be September 9, 10 and 11.
Now that the business is out of the way let me describe some recollections of our trip. Most importantly we ate very, I repeat very well. Patrick’s pork tenderloins with mashed potatoes were superb. He keeps saying how easy that cooking stuff is but I don’t remember any camping trip that I’ve eaten as well as when he does his thing. However I must congratulate Uncle Jim again for his Spaghetti and meatballs. Mike, Uncle Ray and Ted were up to the challenge to be sure we never lacked for the nourishment necessary to sustain our well tuned bodies as we completed numerous physically demanding activities including mountain climbing, white water kayaking, lumber jacking, trail maintenance … well you were there you know the drill. John’s breakfasts have always been spot on with all the elements of a hearty he-man breakfast.
Mike Moore impresses me more with each trip. Who else would have thought to bring a laser pointer to identify various stars, planets and constellations? BTW North is not up. Fishing this year was exceptional with Brook Trout being the most common catch. The insight provided by our fishing guide Bill was of great value to the fly fishermen of the group. Well I’ve managed to fill the page without incriminating myself or anvone else so I’ll sign off with another Merry Christmas
